Archive: A legend lives as the final chapter comes to a close – Sir Alex Ferguson retires
The football world experienced a shock today with the announcement that Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, will retire at the end of the 2012/13 season. Supporters wept, arch-rivals rejoiced and the majority of neutrals, myself included, simply applauded the achievements of one of the world's greatest football managers.
Fergie developed a footballing dynasty that continues to thrive well into the truly commercial era of football, carving out a reputation for winning well and winning badly, shrewd signings, and perhaps even shrewder sales.
Of course, like all men, he made some mistakes, missed the mark at times, and even simply got it plain wrong. However, every time this happened his determination, knowledge and ability, brought the best out of his players and coaches to achieve the success now synonymous with his name.
No manager in the modern era, and perhaps the whole of footballing history has had an influence such as him. He will be missed, but he will never be forgotten.
