Welcome to edition two of Chronicle, featuring Den Of Geek, Krispy Kreme, (oh dear!) Darren Clarke and Colin Bloomfield.
Film - The relationship between PR and movie journalists
One of my favourite places to visit on the web is Den Of Geek, a leading site for news, reviews and updates on film, TV, games and comics. Increasingly, I have found their opinion pieces offer excellent insight into their thoughts on these subjects and their own experience in the industry.
This latest article discusses how websites get early access to films, the conversations that go on behind the scenes and a whole lot more. Well-worth a read.
Krispy Kreme Klub... it was never going to go well was it?
In a case of life imitating art (well, a Simpson's joke), the Hull branch of Krispy Kreme innocently published KKK Wednesday as part of a series of half-term activities for kids. For those who don't know, KKK is a common abbreviation for the Ku Klux Klan, a series of connected, right-wing groups who seek white racial purity in the US. Basically, not people you want your brand to be associated with.
You can see how this fail has come about, through Krispy Kreme's signature use of the letter 'K', and in fairness to the Hull branch, the KKK connection is not something hugely known in the UK. But, you would hope the more senior marketing team who approved this would have noticed in advance.
Sport - Darren Clarke, Europe's 2016 Ryder Cup captain
The European golfing community was in unanimous agreement following this week's decision to announce Darren Clarke as Europe's captain for the 2016 Ryder Cup in Hazeltine, USA.
Clarke is easily one of most likeable and respected golfers on the tour, with four Ryder Cup victories to his name as a player and two as a non-playing vice captain.
His spirit and attitude define Europe's success in the 21st Century, most notably in a very emotional 2006 tournament, where he helped secure three points, just six weeks after his wife Heather passed away. His tears as he won his singles match will live long in the memory.
Derby - Colin Bloomfield Melanoma Appeal
BBC Radio Derby presenter and all-round top bloke Colin Bloomfield has launched an appeal to raise money for Melanoma, a type of skin cancer.
Colin himself was diagnosed with Stage Four Melanoma in 2013 and as recently as November 2014 he was told he had 'months to live'. But in his own words, Colin is still here and still fighting, raising awareness for this horrendous, but still under-appreciated, form of cancer. This appeal, in partnership with Skcin, aims to make Derbyshire and East Staffordshire the 'Sun Safe Capital' of the UK.
Something I didn't realise until researching it, but it turns out that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK.
