Mentoring at any level is hugely rewarding.
Whether it's a five minute chat or years of guidance, knowing someone values your advice and experience is humbling and rewarding.
It gives us as mentors a huge sense of pride, not least when we see people take on board what we're saying, and then go on to use it to succeed in their own way.
All of this is why mentoring means so much to me.
But, it's not about me…
The easiest place to be when mentoring is the mentor!
Anyone using their mentor's advice needs to give someone else more credit… themselves!
You deserve the credit for all you've done.
By taking action from mentoring, you will make massive strides in self-improvement and development.
In fact, by seeking advice and mentoring in the first place you've gone way further than most people do in their careers.
And trust me, being the mentor is the easiest half of the relationship.
I can only offer my guidance, encouragement, a gentle shove, or the occasional kick up the arse (if needed!)… you have to do the doing!
All of this gives you a massively increased chance of succeeding – whether that's by refining your skills, pushing yourself for promotion, or taking the leap for a new role.
Anyone doing any of this should take a step back for a moment and consider their progress.
You'll be surprised at how far you've come.
Revisiting the oxygen mask analogy
It's not just about success either – however that may be defined.
I've written before on the importance of putting yourself first, but not through selfish reasons.
Prioritising you gives you a far better chance of trusting yourself and switching off (or at least turning down the volume) on imposter syndrome.
Your mentor is helping you to navigate whatever you're trying to achieve, but you're the one in control.
But if you don't put that oxygen mask on and help yourself first, you’ll be swallowed up by self-doubt and critique that you'll end up paralysed by fear of failure.
Now’s the time for you to say well done…
Time for you to find a mirror!
